Effective tailings storage facility design demands a strong focus on risk management across all structures and life‑cycle stages, from conception through to closure. At Ausenco, we place this principle at the core of our work, pursuing responsible, sustainable solutions that benefit both society and the environment.

Younger is a civil engineer with focus on geotechnics and tailings storage facilities (TSF), with over 30 years of experience in the development of large-scale mining projects. His career spans all stages of the TSF life cycle—from conceptual, pre-feasibility and feasibility studies, through construction, commissioning, operations, project management, supervision, risk management, quality assurance, and closure studies.

He is currently a Senior Geotechnical and Tailings Engineer based in our Lima office, where provides technical support to project teams and undertakes specialised project reviews. His work prioritises safe, efficient solutions that are aligned with technical standards and risk-management best practices.

Throughout his career, Younger has contributed to major and geographically complex projects across Peru and the region. These include the Quebrada Honda TSF for SPCC, the Enlozada and Linga TSF at Cerro Verde, expansion studies for the Las Bambas TSF, and conceptual studies for the Antamina tailings facility and Cobre Panamá TSF. His background also includes process optimisation, risk analysis, value engineering, and operational cost reduction.

Younger holds a degree in Civil Engineering from the Universidad Nacional Santiago Antúnez de Mayolo (Peru), along with a specialisation in Project Management from the Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú. He has also undertaken advanced training in solids-liquids transport at the Saskatchewan Research Council (SRC Canada) and Georgia Iron Works (GIW USA), as well as refresher courses at the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) and the Australian National Committee on Large Dams (ANCOLD).

He is actively involved in the development and sharing of technical knowledge through his collaboration with professional bodies such as the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) and serves as a technical reviewer for Gecamin’s Tailings Chile conference. Younger is a member of ASCE, SME, ANCOLD, ASTM, and ASDSO.
