A connected, data-driven operation is the future of mining where real-time operating data is captured and analysed to maximise revenue, identify opportunity and minimise risk.

Ausenco’s Integrated Technology Solutions (ITechS) platform embraces the technological leap of the digital revolution in mining and merges it with predictive analytics providing a systematic approach to the connected data-driven vision.

The integrated approach aims to minimise the mining constraints and increase the productivity of operations holistically. The strategy (illustrated in Figure 1) focuses on the critical objectives of mining production by tailoring bespoke solutions to suit the specific requirements, problems or issues experienced at the site.

The objective is to define the value-opportunity for mining, process, asset and logistical constraints based on Life of Mine (LoM) and Life of Asset (LoA) assessments. The appropriate value-opportunities are defined by four key elements that increase the net-present revenue by the hour (minimise the dollar cost per tonne of metal produced):

  • Resource definition –feedback for mine-to-mill-to-metal optimisation
  • Productivity – production outcomes based on the mine plan
  • Operational cost – value opportunity driver for NPV calculations
  • Removing production constraints – minimise process bottlenecks and reduce logistics constraints

Baselining is a critical step defining the value-opportunity of underperforming operations using the integrated optimisation approach. The aim is to determine the production constraints in the flowsheet mapped against plant and asset performances and operating costs, see Figure 2. For each iteration of the optimisation lifecycle, the value-opportunity of the mining operation is resolved to maximise the NPV.

A solutions map combines the real-time data analytics of the mining, process and asset performances with the integrated optimisation baseline objectives. The map identifies critical variances in operations, and creates a focused, data-driven set of solutions with key production targets for operators, mining superintendents, general managers and others, including senior mining executives. The solutions map is visualised using the operations’ information management systems, enabling a concise and focused approach of an integrated mining operation.

Ausenco’s systematic approach from solution identification to solution implementation is summarised against the potential saving for operations in Figure 3. Ausenco recognises the value of data integration with the integrated optimisation approach as this enables smarter data-driven operations which advances mining operations into the 21st century with efficiency and safety in mind.
