The project represents an extensive waterfront redevelopment of a portion of Gravelly Bay on Lake Erie, which will eventually encompass both recreation and tourist activities and include such planned activities as: 930 slip marina; 1,000 sqm Marina Centre building; boat launching ramps; boat rental concessions; fish bait and tackle concessions; 70 guest room hotel with 100 seat dining room, a 50 seat lounge and patio and meeting facilities; a 100 seat restaurant with an outdoor patio accommodating 50 seats; an aquatic playground; and an urban park.
The overall 10 hectare site was developed in phases. Ausenco designed the municipal services for the entire site including sanitary sewer, water, roads and pavements, storm drainage and electrical distribution. Due to site material (harbour dredging), the construction of a conventional gravity system would have required very extensive dewatering procedures and would be subject to extensive differential settlements.
Ausenco designed a low pressure collection system utilising grinder pumps at each source of effluent discharging to a common force main to overcome these restraints.
Electrical distribution provides for a complete 27.6 kV loop underground system designed to Port Colborne Hydro Commission standards. Pad mounted style transformers and sectionalisers are positioned to service future buildings and facilities, while providing flexibility to accommodate any future expansion requirements. Telephone and cable TV services are also distributed throughout the site for future connections. Site lighting is provided for walkways, docks, parking lots and roadways.
