Magnolia: LNG Simulation Study

Location
Louisiana, USA
Client
Magnolia LNG
Timeframe
2014 - 2015

Magnolia LNG (a subsidiary of LNG Limited) is developing an 8 Mt/y LNG liquefaction and export terminal on the Industrial Canal of the Calcasieu channel in Louisiana, USA.

Ausenco was engaged to validate the planned terminal throughput and assess the terminal’s performance.

Ausenco Solution

We expanded an existing dynamic simulation model of ship traffic along the Calacasieu channel to include the planned Magnolia export terminal along with other existing and future vessel traffic.

We modelled the LNG terminal and channel operations, including LNG liquefaction, catch-up capability following production deficits, detailed vessel operations at the terminal, and ship traffic throughout the channel.

Ship traffic restrictions were replicated in the model, such as draft restrictions, based on tidal and current data, wind and visibility closures, and convoy requirements and prioritization.

Project outcomes and achievements

The terminal received regulatory authorization for construction and operation of the facility; Magnolia LNG is completing marketing of the terminal’s capacity before beginning construction.
