The Spent Potlining Project involved the design and construction of a treatment facility for spent potlining material (a waste product from the aluminum smelting process).

The flowsheet consisted of feed preparation, an air swept SAG mill, air classification circuit, baghouse, product handling, calcination and hydrometallurgical treatment of the calcine.

Ausenco’s scope included the planning and supervision of an extensive pilot plant program; preparation of a definitive feasibility study; detailed engineering design and preparation of specifications for all process equipment; procurement, inspection and expediting for all process equipment; site construction management; commissioning of the plant and project management and associated cost control, reporting and scheduling.

Project highlights included:

  • project completed on time and within budget
  • world first technology for the treatment of this type of material
  • close consultation and interaction with client’s research and development personnel
  • successful scale-up from pilot plant to full scale commercial operation.
