The severe landslides and tailings failures seen in the past decades has reinforced to me the importance of geotechnical best practices in achieving safer structures, reduced environmental impacts and optimised project costs and footprint.

Rogério’s experience includes working on large mining projects where he provided expertise in dam safety, design reviews, tailings disposal (dams and stacks), risk assessments, and Engineer of Record services. In addition, he has also provided consulting services for foundation projects in the industrial and infrastructure sectors.

Rogério’s started as a geotechnical design engineer, designing gravity and anchor walls, pile foundations, dewatering systems, and water and tailings dams. He helped to successfully deliver numerous slope stabilisation projects at critical locations along railways and highways in Brazil and in Peru; water dams in Brazil, Iraq and Ecuador; and many tailings’ dams and storage facilities in Brazil and Jamaica.

In addition to his design expertise, Rogério’s also brings extensive field work experience for thermal and industrial plants, water and tailings dams, underpinnings, and excavations including two years in Ecuador leading an onsite design team for the construction of four dams and four channels. Rogério was responsible for supervising geotechnical investigations, construction works and design reviews subway lines in Rio de Janeiro, including Botafogo-Copacabana (cut-and-cover and drill-and-blast), and Ipanema-Leblon (using a tunnel boring machine), as well as for other road projects. Recently, his work has focused on tailings disposition, including dam safety inspection reports, design of dam and TSF raises, monitoring plans and Engineer of Record services.

He graduated in Civil Engineering with an emphasis in Geotechnics from Poli-UFRJ in 1983, with a Master's degree in Geotechnics from COPPE-UFRJ in 1991.
