I help clients navigate the complex and dynamic nature of coastal environments by developing sustainable, resilient and cost-effective engineering solutions that support long-term project performance.

With more than 15 years of experience in coastal engineering, Luciano has a diverse background in designing coastal structures, shoreline protections, river embankments, offshore breakwaters, habitat offsetting and nature-based solutions. His expertise includes characterising hydrodynamic conditions, wave transformations and sediment transport in shallower waters, using various numerical models in coastal regions, estuaries, rivers and lakes.

Luciano plans and optimises layouts for ports and harbours, establishes flood construction levels and proposes adaptation strategies to address global warming and sea level rise. He also conducts metocean analyses, dispersion modelling, mooring analyses and contributes to dredging studies. His experience spans the oil and gas, energy, mining, infrastructure and environmental sectors, both within Canada and internationally. Luciano has contributed to a wide range of projects, from feasibility studies to detailed design, providing specialist consulting, third-party reviews and inspection services.

Luciano’s notable recent projects include the design of an artificial reef in Burrard Inlet, developed as a compensation habitat to foster kelp growth. This project required close collaboration with a multidisciplinary team to achieve its environmental engineering objectives. He is also the project manager and designer for a shoreline protection project for the City of Hamilton.

Luciano holds a bachelor’s degree in oceanography and a master’s degree in marine geology from Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul in Porto Alegre, Brazil. He later completed his doctorate in coastal and oceanographic engineering at the University of Florida in Gainesville, United States.
