At the 2026 World Mining Congress, Ausenco highlighted that artificial intelligence helps accelerate processes and improve decision-making throughout the mining lifecycle.

June 2026 — Digital transformation has become a key factor in the development of more efficient, sustainable, and competitive mining projects globally. Peru is no exception to this trend, with engineering consulting firms increasingly leveraging artificial intelligence (AI) as a strategic tool to optimise processes, improve data analysis, and accelerate decision-making at various stages of the mining lifecycle.

The rise of this trend was a key topic at the upcoming World Mining Congress 2026, an event that's brought together global industry leaders in Lima to discuss the future of mining, AI and data-driven decision-making.

According to data published by The Engineer magazine, 67% of engineering firms believe they could lose competitiveness over the next two years if they do not make significant progress in digital transformation. Additionally, 92% already use generative AI to analyze data, automate repetitive tasks and process technical information. According to a recent IBM study, 86% of buyers of consulting services say they actively seek out companies that incorporate AI and technology into their operations.

For Andrés Obrecht, Vice President of Ausenco Peru, demand for these tools has been growing and represents an opportunity to develop more efficient projects that are better equipped to address the sector’s current challenges.

“AI helps us process large volumes of information, identify opportunities for optimisation, and streamline complex technical processes. However, at Ausenco, we understand that AI is a complementary tool that enhances the work of our specialists, but it does not replace the judgment, experience or analytical skills of our teams,” explained Obrecht.

The executive noted that the application of AI can add value at various stages of the mining lifecycle, from conceptual and pre-feasibility studies to detailed engineering, risk management, operational planning, water management and infrastructure optimisation. It also improves simulations, automates data analysis, and facilitates modeling and technical evaluation processes.

“Today, investors are seeking strategic partners capable of combining technological innovation with proven expertise in engineering and project execution. The key lies in applying these tools responsibly, ensuring more informed decisions and projects that are better prepared to meet market demands and sustainability requirements,” he added.

Ausenco at the World Mining Congress 2026

As part of the World Mining Congress 2026, Ausenco specialists participated in various technical sessions related to the integration of energy, water, and tailings in project development; structural integrity management of critical mining and industrial infrastructure; analysis of seepage in filtered tailings; and the incorporation of Indigenous values and interests into mining projects.

Representatives included Felipe Villarreal, Asset Optimization Consultant, Omar Mejías, Regional Technical Manager for South America, Victor Puyén, Geotechnical Engineer, and María Inés Maita, Director of Social Performance at Ausenco.

By participating, Ausenco aimed to advance the discussion on how mining can more efficiently address operational, environmental, and social challenges currently shaping project development in the country and region.
