The initiative aims to reduce school dropout rates and facilitate access to education in communities where children walk up to 4 kilometers a day to get to school.

Puno, November 2025. - In the communities of Nicasio and Cabanillas, in the province of Lampa, Puno, dozens of schoolchildren set out every day on long walks of between two and four kilometers to attend classes. For many, this routine represents a real challenge and, in some cases, an obstacle to continuing their studies or arriving at school on time.

Faced with this reality, young professionals from the Ausenco Peru Graduate Program joined forces with the NGO Baika to donate 55 bicycles, helmets, and repair kits to schoolchildren in these rural areas, with the aim of improving their access to education, safety, and well-being. The activity was attended by representatives from Ausenco, local authorities, and principals from the beneficiated schools.

"Every kilometer these children travel by bicycle is another step toward knowledge. At Ausenco, we are proud to contribute to enabling more children to reach their schools safely and with hope," said Leonardo Pena, Vice President of Ausenco Peru.

In rural areas of the country, many cases of school dropouts are related to a lack of transportation. According to records from the Education Quality Statistics (Escale) of the Ministry of Education, over the past fifteen years, more than 75,000 students have stopped attending classes, with one of the contributing factors being the distance between their homes and the educational centers. In particular, in Puno, this issue has had a sustained impact on school enrollment each year.

For its part, Baika, with more than six years of work in 12 regions of the country, has delivered more than 2,300 bicycles to schoolchildren in rural communities. In addition to donating bicycles , the organization trains students in road safety and basic maintenance, promoting autonomy, responsibility, and confidence.

Through this social responsibility initiative, Ausenco and Baika reaffirm their commitment to rural education, demonstrating that a means of transportation such as the bicycle can open paths to a future with more opportunities.
