Paolo is an industrial civil engineer specialising in mine closure. He manages contracts, leads multidisciplinary teams and provides senior-level engineering advisory. He also holds qualifications in risk prevention, quality assurance and environmental management.
Paolo offers strategic leadership and expert guidance across all project phases—from profiling and prefeasibility to feasibility and detailed design. He has served as a project manager overseeing the preparation, processing, evaluation and supervision of environmental permits, including Environmental Impact Assessments, Declaración de Impacto Ambiental (DIAs) in Chile, and sector-specific mining permits. Paolo has also led teams in analysing and developing guidelines and standards for assessing environmental and sectoral mining permits.
Recently, he led the underground mine closure profile engineering for CODELCO’s Andina site, providing solutions for the definitive closure of Panel III. He also worked as senior mine closure advisor for the prefeasibility phase of Anglo American’s El Soldado site. In this role, he supported strategic decision-making for effective site closure, led corporate-level workshops on closure execution risks, and identified opportunities to optimise closure commitments with the Authority. These efforts resulted in the development of new, cost-effective measures that comply with both the company’s internal standards and the current regulations.
In 2025, Paolo co-authored the paper "Identified gaps in mine closure planning in Chile: moving from permitting to engineering", which outlines the main gaps in transitioning from permitting to mine closure engineering. The paper proposes solutions for implementing effective mine closure plans that comply with regulations while limiting the impact on budgets and deadlines, and was presented at the Sustainable Mining 2025 Congress (GECAMIN) and accepted for the Mine Closure 2025 Congress in Sweden.
