We caught up with Kim, a Civil Engineer who has recently completed the Ausenco new professionals program (NPP) to discuss some key highlights of her time on site, her plans for the future, and some advice for future graduates.
Tell us a bit about your role at Ausenco.
Over my time at Ausenco, I have been both a civil and structural engineer, working on a diverse range of projects within the mining sector. By having my foot in both doors, I've had the privilege of contributing to numerous aspects of a mine’s infrastructure design, ranging from everything dirt, drains and roads to the intricate detailing of steel and concrete structures.
What I like the most about being a civil/structural engineer is that we get to design everything that stays still! From the towering steel structures that support conveyor systems to the solid concrete foundations that support it all. At Ausenco, this doesn't mean we just throw more steel or concrete into the design. Instead, we work together as a team to come up with the most economical solution that minimises environmental impacts whilst still exceeding project requirements.
Describe your experience in the new professionals program, how did you find it?
From day one of the NPP program, I found myself immersed in a dynamic environment where learning and growth were actively encouraged. What truly made a lasting impact was the support from the people around which was always at arm's reach. The accessibility to not only a buddy, but to numerous technical experts within the company is invaluable, whenever I encountered hurdles or sought advice on a project, there was always a wealth of knowledge eager to pass on their advice and opinions.
Beyond the technical aspects, numerous networking and professional development opportunities were offered in the program. These events reminded me that you can’t learn everything about the industry by sitting in front of a computer screen. The events allowed me to expand my horizons and forge meaningful connections with others in the industry. So, whether it was through a challenging new project or industry events, each day, I found myself continually challenged and eager to learn. The program was an excellent introduction into the real world of an engineer.
What were some of the key highlights over the last few years?
The biggest highlight of the NPP program for me was my site secondment to the Mantoverde project. At the beginning of 2023, I was seconded as a structural engineer for the Mantoverde project which is located in Chile. I went over there not knowing anyone who I was going to be working with, let alone how to speak Spanish. It is hard to summarise the experience up in a few sentences, there were so many challenges, learnings and opportunities for growth. Each day was something different, whether it be learning how to communicate with the contractors, or coming up with the answers to problems that needed a solution yesterday. There is so much satisfaction of seeing the designs come to life – there wasn’t a day where there wasn’t a big smile on my face
What are your next steps for your career?
At the moment I am focusing on continuing my technical development in the civil and structural disciplines. I will continue this for a little while more but ultimately, I am working towards a position where I am in more a project engineering or people managing role. I love working with people and get a lot of value out of talking to different disciplines to learn a little bit about their lays of the land. So being able to take this knowledge to a point where I am able to successfully manage little jobs would make me proud
What advice would you give to prospective students looking to apply for a graduate position?
Cliché and overused but – be a “yes person” you miss 100% of the chances you don’t take. At Ausenco, whilst having a tremendous amount of support from your buddies, mentors and colleagues – you are really encouraged to forge your own path, and build the career that you want to achieve. So use this as motivation, and whenever you here of an opportunity that aligns with what you want – say yes – whenever there is an opportunity that you want, but haven’t heard about it in our office. Create it!
