Ausenco was the major design contractor for the 254mw Island Cogeneration project built by ABB on an EPC basis. This dual-fuel combined cycle power plant, nominally rated at 254 mw, is British Columbia’s largest independent power generation facility.
The facility was designed to supply electricity to BC Hydro and process steam to the adjacent pulp and paper mill. Since the shutdown of the steam host, Ausenco have defined the necessary upgrades to convert the plant from its cogeneration configuration to a pure power generation facility.
Major plant components are:
- ABB single shaft power train with one gas-fired combustion turbine, steam turbine, and steam condenser
- ABB heat recovery steam generator
- Demineralised water treatment facility
- On-site natural gas compression facility
- On-site storage, fuel washing and transfer system for back-up distillate firing in the combustion turbine
- Mechanical draft cooling tower
- Plant water, fuel, and waste water handling system
- Centralised shops, stores, and maintenance facilities
Ausenco provided balance of plant engineering services including process, mechanical, electrical, controls, civil, structural, and building services for this ABB supplied combined cycle plant.
The project is the recipient of the Consulting Engineers of BC Award of Excellence in the Energy Category.
