NaiKun Wind Farm: Offshore meteorological station

Location
Hecate Strait, British Columbia, Canada
Client
NaiKun Wind Development Inc

NaiKun Wind Development engaged Ausenco as Owner’s Engineer for the preliminary engineering and associated management services of the NaiKun Wind Farm.

When fully operational, the 1750mw offshore NaiKun Wind Farm, located in the waters of Hecate Strait between Haida Gwaii (the Queen Charlotte Islands) and Prince Rupert on the British Columbia mainland will be one of the world’s largest offshore wind farm developments.

Our involvement included detailed design and the successful deployment of an offshore meteorological station with a very sophisticated Lidar wind measurement system in Hecate Strait.

Other activities included preliminary wind and wave studies, preliminary evaluations for cable options to Prince Rupert and connecting to the Haida Gwaii grid, constructability studies and project implementation methods.

This will be followed by the preparation of preliminary engineering, procurement planning, and cost estimates to prepare NaiKun for full project implementation.

NaiKun Wind Development Inc has been engaged in wind energy development in the Haida Energy Field off the coast of British Columbia since 2001. When fully operational, its five-phase 1750mw NaiKun Wind Farm will generate enough electricity to power 600 000 homes.
