Sergio has over 24 years of experience leading HSE teams on EPC and EPCM projects. He works closely with multidisciplinary teams to deliver high HSE performance on mining, liquefied natural gas (LNG), hydroelectric, and petrochemical projects.
As the HSE Director of South America, Sergio navigates evolving regulations and cultural differences to ensure compliance across different jurisdictions, meet client requirements, engage diverse workforces, and manage the challenges of remote operations. He drives continuous improvement in safety performance in demanding industrial environments and fosters a proactive safety culture through strong leadership. His expertise spans both Latin American and United States regulations, including standards set by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), the American National Standards Institute (ANSI), and the National Examination Board in Occupational Safety and Health (NEBOSH).
Recently, Sergio was the HSE project manager for the Mantoverde Development project, which includes a sulphide ore processing plant and expanded desalination infrastructure to support freshwater needs. His previous roles include HSE tanks manager for the Corpus Christi Liquefaction project (the first greenfield LNG export facility in the United States), and HSE project manager for the Escondida Water Supply EPCM project, a desalination plant in Antofagasta, Chile.
Sergio holds multiple professional certifications and academic credentials that reflect his expertise in engineering, safety, and quality management. He is certified by Chile’s National Health Service (Servicio Nacional de Salud, SNS), the National Geology and Mining Service (Servicio Nacional de Geología y Minería, SERNAGEOMIN), and internationally by NEBOSH.
Academically, he holds an engineering degree from the Instituto de Artes y Ciencias de la Comunicación (IACC) in Chile, and completed a diploma course in quality, safety, and environmental management. Additionally, Sergio is certified as a Lead Auditor for the following international standards, ISO 9001- Quality Management Systems, ISO 14001 - Environmental Management Systems, and OHSAS 18001 / ISO 45001 - Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems.
