Humberto is a seasoned senior geotechnical engineer, bringing a wealth of experience from the infrastructure and mining sectors. His expertise includes tailings storage facilities, heap leach pads, mine waste dumps, mining closures and geo-environmental site investigations. He is also skilled in highways, earthworks, foundation design, deep foundations and soil-contaminant interactions. He has conducted liquefaction and seismic hazard analyses for buildings, levees, tailings, heap leach facilities and mining infrastructure projects.

As a leader, Humberto has managed and mentored design engineering departments, providing senior reviews and guidance to engineers and scientists. His leadership skills complement his experience across the Americas, where he has led and participated in designing and characterizing tailings storage facilities, utilising various management technologies from slurry-based methods to high-density thickened and filtered tailings. Humberto has also acted as senior reviewer for mining reclamation and closure projects, participating in numerous geotechnical evaluations for mining infrastructure.

Humberto has published multiple peer-reviewed articles in journals and conference proceedings. He recently published a case study featured in the Society for Mining, Metallurgy, and Exploration’s Tailings Management Handbook. Originally from Mexico, he earned a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering and a Master of Science in Geotechnical Engineering there. To further demonstrate his commitment to excellence in his field, Humberto obtained a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Civil Engineering from the University of British Columbia, Canada.
